Connecticut College Questions Bottled Water Usage
Adam Miller, a Senior at Connecticut College, provides us with a poignant assessment of the drinking water infrastructure at his school. In an article entitled, “The Battles of the Bottle”, Miller discusses the potential for a bottled water ban at the college. As he reports, the overwhelming environmental and feasibility arguments all points towards an outright prohibition. The bottles of water do not provide any benefit that cannot be reaped from a bathroom or kitchen sink. However, quite astutely, Miller also indicates that these are not the only factors decision makers have in mind. Foremost in many people’s opinion is the schools appearance to prospective students, parents, and alumni. Allison Kripke ’13 offers, “There is a need for water, on tours and such. It would look bizarre if we didn’t sell water.” Miller’s solution lies in Bottleless Water Technology and refilling stations, where students could easily replenish canteens with fresh, cold, pure water, without the environmental costs associated with the production of bottled water.
